A Robinson Crusoe story in the fossil record: Plant-insect interactions from a Middle Jurassic ephemeral volcanic island (Eastern Spain)

چکیده

We present here the first record of plant-insect interactions from an ephemeral volcanic island that was placed 150 km away nearest continental mass. The formed and destroyed during Aalenian (Middle Jurassic) in a shallow sea southwestern Tethyan realm corresponding today to place located eastern Spain. These were mainly documented leaves Cycadophytes (comprising both Cycads Bennettitales), they have been described classified into different Damage Types (DTs) Functional Feeding Groups (FFGs). assigned 11 DTs including types hole feeding, margin surface piercing sucking, mining(?), some putative ovipositional scars. presence these implies colonized by groups insects, orders such as Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Odonata, or Lepidoptera. low variety incidence comparing with other Middle Jurassic assemblages indicate diversity insects not high, possibly due difficulty reaching this various lineages, small size landmass island, limited food availability (mainly Cycadophytes). Possible colonization strategies could be atmospheric dispersion, using floating remains plants pterosaurs vectors, active flight for Lepidoptera, rafting marine currents flightless insects. • First study Iberian Peninsula. Comparison mid-Jurassic interactions. Identification possible culprits damages. Discussion on Jurassic.

Plant Insect-Interactions in Jurassic Fossil Flora from Sri Lanka

Early Jurassic fossil plants from sedimentary rocks of Tabbowa, Sri Lanka show a variety of evidence for plant-insect interactions indicative of a terrestrial habitat prevailed in the Gondwanaland. The observed interactions are skelitonizing, blotch and galls, ovipositions or coprolites, leaf mines and leaf chewing. These traces indicate that insects had associated the plants for various purpos...

The earliest fossil record of Panorpidae (Mecoptera) from the Middle Jurassic of China

The early history of Panorpidae (Mecoptera) is poorly known due to sparse fossil records. Up to date, only nine fossil species have been described, all from the Paleogene, except the Early Cretaceous Solusipanorpa gibbidorsa Lin, 1980. However, we suggest S. gibbidorsa is too incompletely preserved to permit even family classification. A new genus with two new species, Jurassipanorpa impunctata...

New fossil Praeaulacinae wasps (Insect: Hymenoptera: Evanioidea: Praeaulacidae) from the Middle Jurassic of China.

A new genus with a new species, Archaulacus probus gen. et sp. nov., and two new species, Praeaulacus subrhombeus sp. nov., P. tenellus sp. nov., belonging to the subfamily Praeaulacinae (Praeaulacidae) are described and illustrated. The specimens were collected from the Middle Jurassic of Jiulongshan Formation at Daohugou in Inner Mongolia, China. Archaulacus gen. nov. differs from other gener...

The Somatic Chromosomes of Sophora jernandeziana ( Fabaceae ) , an Endemic Tree from Robinson Crusoe Island 1

The mitotic chromosome number and karyotype of Sophora fernandeziana (Phil.) Skottsb. (subfamily Papilionoideae) are reported for the first time. The chromosome number, 2n = 18, is the modal number reported for the genus. The chromosomes are small (average length 1.55 ± 0.23 J.1m) and bear no satellites. The intrachromosomal and interchromosomal asymmetry indices were AI = 0.26 and A2 = 0.18, r...

Insect diversity in the fossil record.

Insects possess a surprisingly extensive fossil record. Compilation of the geochronologic ranges of insect families demonstrates that their diversity exceeds that of preserved vertebrate tetrapods through 91 percent of their evolutionary history. The great diversity of insects was achieved not by high origination rates but rather by low extinction rates comparable to the low rates of slowly e...
